Mission and Philosophy

The Mission of the Teacher Education Programs is to be a center of Montessori Education for adults who wish to become skilled providers of developmentally appropriate services for children birth to 6 years. We value each human being as unique and deserving of dignity and respect.  We acknowledge that adult learners progress through several stages of development and see their learning as an active and participatory experience.

Program Goals and Objectives

Columbus Montessori's Teacher Education Program prepares the teacher to be

  • a dynamic link between the child and the learning environment

  • a keen observer of the needs of the child

  • able to prepare a learning environment that is developmentally appropriate

  • ready to establish a partnership with parents

Admissions Requirements

  • Adult at least 21 years of age

  • High school graduate

  • Bachelor degree encouraged, but nor required

Admission to the Program is open to all regardless of sex, race, color, creed, or national origin.

Programs

Infant and Toddler - This course offers a combination of course work, classroom observation, and an option of working with children in a supervised classroom environment during a year of student teaching.  Classrooms may be designed for infant (birth through 18 months), toddlers (18 months to three years), or infant and toddler (comprehensive birth to three years.)  Special focus is given to particular issues facing children who are in full day childcare environments.

Early Childhood - This course offers a combination of course work, classroom observation, opportunity to practice with materials in a laboratory setting, and to work with children in a supervised classroom environment during a school year of student teaching.

Credentials

Upon completion of all course requirements, including satisfactory performance during practicum and written and practical examinations and payment of all fees, the student is a candidate for recommendation to the American Montessori Society for a full credential for those who hold a bachelor's degree and an associate credential for those with less than an bachelor's degree.

Program is affiliated with the American Montessori Society (AMS) and accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (Macte) and complies with all MACTE procedures, policies and regulations.
