At Columbus Montessori Education Center, we often say that it takes a community to raise a child. This year, that truth has been especially evident.
Thanks to the generosity of parents, alumni families, staff, and friends of CMEC, our 2025 Impact Fund: Seeds of Sustainability is fully funded and is already underway. We are incredibly grateful for your belief in our children and in the power of hands-on, meaningful learning.
Seeds of Sustainability brings environmental responsibility into students’ everyday work. Children are learning not just what sustainability is, but how to care for living systems, work collaboratively, and take responsibility for their environment indoors and outdoors, across all age levels.
Already, garden beds have been prepared with the help of volunteers, and composting has been launched and woven into daily school life. Right now, we are purchasing hydroponic growing equipment, preparing greenhouse materials, and launching hydroponics in classrooms throughout the school.
Most importantly, students are experiencing Montessori principles in action:
- Practical Life through daily care of growing systems
- Environmental Studies through hands-on learning about food systems and sustainability
- Leadership as older students mentor younger ones
Looking ahead, this work will continue to grow. Teachers will receive training on hydroponics and greenhouse use, and learning will deepen through classroom integration across the school. From winter through late spring, students will engage in recycled growing systems, data tracking, aeroponics builds, collaborative experiments, and student-led tours and reflections.
Because of you, this initiative is not just an idea; it is a living, growing part of our school community. Your generosity is helping children develop curiosity, responsibility, and confidence – skills that will stay with them far beyond this school year.
Thank you for being part of what makes CMEC such a special place.
